Spanish Class for Children in Waterbury, Connecticut
Our Spanish program introduces children to the Spanish language through fun and interactive learning experiences.
Classes include music, movement, literature, culture, writing activities, and art.
The learning themes introduced in Spanish coincide with the themes that are being taught center wide in each of the classrooms. Some of the themes explored during through each academic year will include, but are not limited to: Transportation, Seasons, The Five Senses, My Family, My School, Apples, Community Helpers, The Farm, Pets, Animals, Our World and Holidays in the United States and Hispanic countries.
The Spanish teacher and the classroom teachers work hand in hand to make the time spent in Spanish beneficial to each child.
In addition to the theme-specific vocabulary that is taught, helpful and common phrases that are used throughout the day are also taught to the classroom teachers so the learning of the language will continue after class has concluded. Classroom teachers are encouraged to say phrases like “Let’s go eat!” in English as well as Spanish … Vamos a comer! The Spanish teacher has access to all of the classroom resources and supplies, and classroom teachers are encouraged to use Spanish resources when available and appropriate.
Research shows that the best time to begin introducing a second language to a child is when they are developing their primary language. You will hear many wonderful moments of language from your child as they begin to intermingle English with Spanish!
Learner Outcomes for Pre-School
These outcomes are written for a child who has completed both Young Pre-School and Older Pre-School in Spanish at MiniVentures Early Care and Education Center.
- The child will identify the colors red, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, pink, white, and black as rojo, azul, verde, amarillo, anaranjado, morado, rosado, blanco, and negro when given a visual cue.
- The child will count by rote to 10 in Spanish.
- The child will identify the numbers 1 – 10 in Spanish when given a visual cue.
- The child will recite the Spanish alphabet with the teacher.
- The child will identify a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle as circulo, cuadrado, triangulo, and rectangulo when given a visual cue.
- When prompted by a teacher, the child will appropriately respond to the following :
- Como te llamas?
- Como estas? Or Como EstaUsted?
- With guidance, the child will appropriately respond to simple commands such as: Vamosa las mesas (Let’s go to the tables), levanten la mano (raise your hand), and other phrases commonly used throughout the course of the Spanish class.
- The child will be an active participant when naming the days of the week, date, and months of the year in Spanish.
Learner Outcomes for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten
These outcomes are written for a child who has completed at least Pre-School and Pre-Kindergarten Spanish at MiniVentures Early Care and Education Center.
- The child will identify the colors red, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, pink, black, white, brown, and gray as rojo, azul, verde, amarillo, anaranjado, morado, rosado, negro, blanco, café, and gris. The child will be able to add the word claro or oscura to identify the color as light or dark.
- The child will count by rote to 20 in Spanish.
- The child will use one to one correspondence counting to accurately count to 10 in Spanish.
- The child will accurately identify the numerals 1 – 10 in Spanish when given a visual cue.
- The child will recite the Spanish alphabet and identify letters in the Spanish alphabet with 80% accuracy.
- The child will identify a circle as circulo, a square as a cuadrado, a rectangle as a rectangulo, a triangle as a triangulo, a diamond as a diamante, and an oval as an ovalo.
- The child will name or respond accurately when asked to identify the following :cabeza (head), boca (mouth), pelo (hair), ojos (eyes), orejas (ears), nariz (nose).
- The child will recite by rote the months of the year in Spanish.
- The child will identify a madre, padre, abuelo, abuela, hermano and hermana as members of a family.
- The child will be able to initiate and participate in this simple conversation with the teacher or a peer.

- The child will respond appropriately to simple commands such as levanten la mano (raise your hand), levantense (stand up), sientense (sit down), vamos a las mesas (let’s go to the tables), and other simple commands that are taught and heard regularly throughout the course of the year in Spanish.
